Appalachian Radiotheranostics Coalition (ARC)

Expanding access to community-based theranostics across Appalachia

The Appalachian Radiotheranostic Coalition (ARC) is a regional collaboration built to help community hospitals and rural providers adopt targeted radiopharmaceutical therapies (TRT) safely, effectively, and sustainably. ARC was created through an SNMMI Mars Shot for Nuclear Medicine initiative focused on community-based theranostics, led by the University of Tennessee Medical Center and Carilion Clinic as regional hubs.

Our work is grounded in a practical reality: theranostics has advanced rapidly, but training, staffing confidence, and repeatable implementation workflows have not kept pace in many community settings. ARC exists to close that gap with clear education, hands-on training, and startup guidance that can be adapted locally.

Who We Serve

ARC is designed for community-based teams across the Appalachian corridor, especially those building or expanding TRT services outside of large academic centers. Our primary audiences include:

  • Nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, and radiation oncologists involved in therapy planning and delivery
  • Nuclear medicine technologists supporting imaging and radiopharmaceutical administration
  • Referring providers who drive patient identification and access, including oncology and urology

In-person workshops hosted by the University of Tennessee Medical Center and Carilion Clinic, designed for practical competency building with multidisciplinary participation.

Mentorship & Support

Through mentorship and implementation support, ARC help sites translate training into clinical operations, not just knowledge gains.

Measuring Impact

ARC’s Mars Shot funded initiative includes a structured evaluation plan to ensure training translates into measurable improvements:

  • Pre- and post-training knowledge and confidence assessment
  • Tracking implementation metrics, including referrals and clinical adoption at participating sites
  • Dissemination through peer-reviewed publications and SNMMI presentations
